What to Look Out For and Look For ...
When Choosing your Epoxy Contractor

What to Look Out For:

  1. Water on top of the cement or seeping up through cracks... This can be a MAJOR problem and cause your flooring to delaminate.  Special tests can be performed, and special coatings can be applied to help reduce the risk.
  2. Companies that only do power washing or acid washing... This will not sufficiently open up the cement pores for superior adhesion.
  3. Solvent based epoxies... This can be like breathing paint thinner in YOUR home and is caused by poor paint materials that do not last.  Note that these poor paints can lose 80% of the floor pigments (the most important part) from evaporation, when installed.
  4. Companies that have 1 system for all floors and “Do it yourself kits”... Every floor is a little different and requires professional review and advice.
  5. Direct sunlight on the cement... Flooring may slightly yellow if not coated with the proper UV protective coatings.
  6. Companies that just “fill-in” your control joints in the cement... Your cement will not expand/contract as needed, causing premature cement cracking.
  7. Companies who have no plan for protecting/storing your valuable stuff, other than “outside” during application.

What to Look  For:

  1. A company that performs a moisture test when there is ANY doubt about adhesion.
  2. Diamond grinding or shot blasting that will open the pores of the cement for proper epoxy adhesion.
  3. 100% solids based epoxy (0% of the epoxy will dissolve after installation).  DEMAND this, because thicker is better!
  4. A company who can prove to you that the epoxy they use is stronger than the cement.  Somerset Professionals can demonstrate this by a "cup test".  Ask for the demonstration!
  5. A properly licensed and trained company who knows the paint manufacture specifications and ensures that they obey the paint manufacturers application methods.
  6. An experienced, proven company who can suggest the correct flooring system based upon your needs (sunlight, dry time, hardness of epoxy, type of wear, water problems, chemicals, etc.).
  7. A company who can identify "moving" vs "static" and knows how to solve cement pops.
  8. A company that offers you OPTIONS for textures and surfaces (e.g. colored floors, quartz, metallics, or full flakes) and coatings smooth enough to clean-up but rough enough to be anti slip.
  9. Contractors who use high quality epoxy flooring paint from Thermal-Chem to ensure your long-lasting satisfaction!

A few other questions to consider:

  1. Do you want seams in the floor where your control joints are?
  2. Do you have cracks or cement pops and do you want them fixed?
  3. How rough do you want the topcoat?  Smooth but with an anti-slip resistant coating?
